The Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer created quite a buzz in the beauty community and I was obviously I immediately interested when my favourite beauty blogger, Kathleen Lights, recommended it! I have dry and dehydrated skin, so anything with a bit of extra moisture catches my eye and makes me open my purse. I have been using this product for quite a while and I am reading to share my thoughts.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer
Product: The Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer is a hybrid product that combines a primer and moisturiser into one to give you a smooth, hydrated canvass perfect for makeup application. It promises to provide 24-hour hydration (according to their website the product improve moisture levels instantly in your skin by 127%) and can be used with or without your normal moisturiser.
Packaging: The packaging is really beautiful with a glass bottle and pump mechanism. I do like the pump mechanism, but find the bottle to be incredibly heavy which is probably a sign of the luxury-level. I travel very often and little things like this really matters to me – it is way too heavy and impractical to take with while traveling.
Consistency: The Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer has a thin, watery liquid that is ultra lightweight and rapidly absorbed by the skin. It has almost a serum-like consistency.
How much product do you use? In order to do a full face I need at least 2 pumps, so I think the product might not last very long when used on a daily basis.
Does it work? I am just going to give you the facts of my personal experience:
- I did not notice any significant or additional hydration to my skin, regardless whether I used it with or without my normal moisturisers. It almost feels like it disappears into the skin and then I honestly do not know what happens to it. So I am calling major BS on that 127% increase in hydration claim.
- In terms of priming I did not notice any improvement to the texture of my skin, my pores look exactly the same and some foundations still settled into my fine lines. Even my amazing Estée Lauder Double Wear that never, ever lets me down did not play particularly nice with this product.
- Weirdly despite my dry/dehydrated skin I found my forehead to be oily by mid-day whenever I used the Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer. In light of this I thus do not think this product will work well for readers with oilier skin. I have no idea why this happens as Smashbox clearly states it is a non-grease formula.
Price: R525/$42 for 30ml

What did I think? Initially I thought I would love the Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer – maybe it was all the subtle brainwashing from reading and seeing all the rave reviews. Unfortunately the more I looked at it critically when I was using the product, the more I realised it does not much for me. Nothing spectacular in terms of priming and no fireworks either in the moisturizing department despite the boost of Hyaluronic Acid.
It might very well have something to do with my skintype (dry and dehydrated) and I think normal to combination skin might perhaps enjoy it more? Unfortunately it really didn’t meet my expectations in terms of what I hoped for given my skintype and I just couldn’t experience and see the difference other users raved about. Ultimately when I pay $42 I want something that makes a substantial difference to my makeup routine. In my opinion I think this product will only work for a very specific niché skintype and there is an excellent chance of the average reader ending up disappointed and R500 poorer.
Will I buy this product again? No
** Sephora stocks a mini/travel-size Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer for $15 for 15ml (weird maths if the 30ml retails for $42 – so 2x15ml’s is then cheaper than buying full-size.) So if you think this product might work for you as you have a different skintype, but still cautious about the price tag of the full-size, it might be worth it to purchase a mini-size first.
