I am definitely a bit late to the party and I am sure the hype around this L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation is long gone and forgotten. I was still curious about this product though and picked it up to finally test it for myself. Will I also jump on the rave band-wagon? Let’s find out.
L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation
Product: I am sure this product needs no introduction! The L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation was one of the first drugstore cushion foundations. A cushion foundation is a liquid foundation infused into a sponge to deliver the correct amount of product. According to L’Oreal this foundation has sheer to medium coverage and you can expect a natural, luminous finish. It is suitable for all skintypes, including sensitive skin.
Packaging: I must say, the packaging is beyond gorgeous and pretty good quality. The beautiful compact is practical and sturdy, yet has a touch of luxury with the rose gold lid. There is a handy mirror on the inside of the lid and a complementary round puff.
Consistency: The L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation has a relatively thin liquid consistency that is easy to blend.
Coverage: I agree with the formal description, this foundation has light coverage that can easily be build to a more medium cover without becoming cakey.
Finish: Again, L’Oreal was quite spot on with the finish: it has a very natural-looking finish with a slight luminosity and a healthy glow. I must say that the finish is probably one of the best features for me about this foundation.
Application: It is where the tricky part already started. The complimentary puff is utter rubbish, so don’t even bother. A brush or fingers do not work as both ended up with a very uneven, streaky result. The best application tool for this foundation is a semi-dry Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge (or any soft-when-dry sponge will do). It is very important that the sponge is basically dry, as a wet sponge will result in virtually no coverage.
Primer/No Primer: In short, I have tested the L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation with numerous face primers and I could not find a combination where the two were happy together. With all the primers I have tested the foundation with, I experienced application difficulties (i.e the foundation doesn’t ‘stick’ to the primer/skin and is therefor easily disrupted) and the product becoming very patchy only a few minutes after application. I was ready to throw it in the bin when I decided to test it without any primer and that seems to work the best. It might not be the same situation for all skintypes, but with my skin, I can only wear this foundation in the absence of a primer.
Wear: Where shall I start?
- The formula is very ‘wet’ and takes a very long time to become dry to the touch. As a result you will need to wait a while before applying bronzer, blush etc as the foundation is easily disrupted.
- As mentioned above: with a primer the application is extremely difficult and the finish is overall patchy. You can imagine the wear was not great either.
- Without primer the foundation wore pretty well, but became patchier and worn-off after about 4-6-hours. Despite the absence of a primer, the foundation didn’t settle too much into the fine lines and pores.
- I really liked the finish of this foundation and I am pleased to report that it did not oxidize on my skin.
- I didn’t find the foundation drying on my skin at all, in fact, if anything it was too wet and couldn’t settle down properly.
Shades: On L’Oreal’s website there are 12-shades, but here in the EU and even in all the drugstores I visited in the US I never saw more than 5-6 shades and testers in stock. You can click here to view the full shade range.
Price: $17/€15. To my knowledge the L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation is not available in South Africa as yet, so you will need to purchase it overseas.
What did I think? Look, it is a complicated situation for me with this foundation. The finish was really natural and once of this foundation’s biggest assets in my opinion. Unfortunately for some reason it behaved very unpredictably on my skin. Some days I loved it and some days it was just terrible and on its way to the bin. I have my trusted Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation, so there is no incentive for me to continue struggling with a product trying to figure it out. I expect consistent perfection from a foundation and I was put off by this foundation’s erratic behaviour. I wouldn’t say it is out right bad, but I didn’t love (or even like!) this foundation either. L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation just didn’t live up to the hype for me and I would personally not go through extensive trouble to get my hands on this foundation.
Will I buy this product again? No, I will not repurchase this product.
