I’ve been meaning to write this blogpost for the longest time, but my husband has been hogging it ever since I kindly received it in a press drop a while back. I finally confiscated it a few weeks ago and have been testing it since. Did I love this multi-purpose product as much as my husband did?
Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask
Product: The Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask is a multi-purpose product formulated with salicylic acid, blueberry extract and charcoal to actively reduce the appearance of spots, fight blackheads and unclog blocked pores with a drying action.
Texture: The product has a mildly gritty/grainy texture, but it is not harsh on the skin at all. Even when used on consecutive days I have never experienced any skin sensitivity or irritation.
Fragrance: This is where Jean and I disagree. The Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask has a very strong, very masculine scent which Jean obviously loves. I was not so much into the fragrance and much prefer the Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Clay Wash/Scrub/Mask (review will be up soon!) way more subtle, yet delicious cucumber fragrance. I think if you are sensitive to fragrances, then the charcoal mask’s scent might be a bit too much for you.
Use: The best thing for me about the Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask, especially considering the affordable price point, is that this product is so incredibly versatile. Apart from the fragrance that I did not enjoy, I absolutely loved this product both as a face wash/exfoliator and as a mask. It makes my skin feels fresh, soft, smooth and not even a little bit dry, red or tight. The product has a mild cooling effect on the skin, it is easy to rinse and does not leave any residue behind. Both Jean and I could see an improvement in the clarity of our skins and can confirm that it definitely does the job in terms of clearing up mild breakouts. Neither of us battle with significant/extreme blackheads or blocked pores (my issue is more hormonal and not-so-ideal eating habits), so I cannot really give a guarantee on how this product will react to that particular skin concern.
Skintypes: The Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask is technically aimed at oily and combination skintypes. However, you all know by now I have dry and dehydrated skin and I can confirm that it works pretty well even for me too. I don’t use it on a daily basis at the moment (during the trial period I did), I use it once or twice a week as a mask/exfoliator and my skin is very happy with that.
Price: R80/€9 for 150ml product.
Is this a dupe? I have seen the question floating around if the Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask is a dupe for the Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Mask (R790/€45 for 75ml. You can read my full review here). I own and use both these products and I don’t think the Garnier product is a 100% dupe. Firstly: the Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Mask is not a face wash and can definitely not be used on a daily basis. Secondly: I think in terms of properly drawing out excessive oils and mattifying the skin, the Dermalogica product is definitely superior as a mask compared to Garnier and thus maybe more suitable/effective for very oily skintypes. That being said: I find the Garnier mask gentler on my sensitive, very dry skin and this allows me to still get the benefits of the charcoal clearing out clogged pores and impurities without stripping my skin. I think readers with very dry skin or sensitive skin should approach the Dermalogica mask with caution- it is quite heavy duty! The versatility of the Garnier product versus the Dermalogica mask weighs in heavier for me and makes this of course an incredible multi-purpose product perfect for holidays, travels etc. So I guess your preference for either of the two products will depend on what your skintype, needs and budget are.
What did I think? If it is not quite clear yet: I loved the Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1 Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Wash/Scrub/Mask. Apart from the fragrance, I cannot fault or criticise this product in any way and really enjoyed using it. I think it is phenomenal value for money and the versatility really impressed me.
Will I buy this product again? Yes, I will continue to use it once or twice a week, but my husband uses it on nearly a daily basis and we will need to repurchase soon.
