It is no secret that I am a massive Estée Lauder fan and that I have this bizarre obsession with concealers. I really do not know where my concealer mania comes from – it’s not even a case of me having particularly bad dark circles or anything. I am so picky and pedantic when it comes to giving a concealer an approval – it has to jump through a lot of hoops, perform really well and make me coffee for me to sign off on it. I’ve actually bought the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer a long time ago and have been testing and using it for months. So, does it get my approval? Let’s find out.
Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer
Product: The Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer is marketed as a hydrating cream concealer that promises flawless 24-hour coverage for dark circles and imperfection. The concealer is waterproof, sweat- and humidity resistant, oil-free and non-acnegenic. It also assures the user that the concealer is crease, streak and cake-proof.
Packaging: Unlike their other concealers with doe-foot applicators, the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer is packaged in a squeezy tube. It is easy to control the amount of product you want to dispense and the tube is small enough to take with on travels. If I may be honest: I do prefer doe-foot applicators with concealers purely for the convenience.
Formula: The formula is quite thick, creamy and appears to be highly pigmented.
Coverage: This is where I ran into my first set of troubles with this concealer. Let me just break the suspense right here: the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer is a total hit and miss at the same time. Sometimes it works so well and other days it is literally the biggest disaster I have ever seen under my eyes. It doesn’t really say on the packaging or the website what level of coverage is to be expected. I have tried blending it with a brush, beauty blender and my fingers – on different days I will get anything from light to fuller coverage. For most of the time I would say it is more light to medium coverage. I have tried building it up, but I wouldn’t say it is too successful.
Wear: As mentioned above: some days the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer is my dream concealer and wears so well without giving me any problems. Other days it does exactly the opposite of what it says on the tin: it’s cakey, it dries out my skin so badly and I have literally experienced the worst creasing of my life with this concealer. I have tried it with so many primers, setting powders, foundations – I have literally tried every single option I had at my disposal – but the end result seems to be inconsistent.
Shades: On the international site there are 11 shades in the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer range, covering a broad range of skintones. In South Africa there are 7 of the 11 shades available and in the EU only 6 shades. You can have a look here at the full shade range and here for the South African range.
What did I think? I was very much surprised at the inconsistency of the Estée Lauder Waterproof All Day Extreme Wear Concealer. To this day (and I’ve been using it on and off for a year!) I cannot figure out what the triggers are for a good or a bad day with this product. Even with exactly the same foundation and primer I will have different results on two days. For me personally it is a very unreliable product and definitely not something I will use if I want a guaranteed result or take with on travels. I personally find the coverage mediocre and I have experienced some of the worst creasing with this concealer. I just feel that if you fork out nearly R400 for a concealer it should be better than this love/hate relationship.
Will I buy this product again? No.
