Today I would like to introduce you to my first guest blogger for The Secret Board. I have been toying with the idea for a while to bring ‘fresh blood’ on board as I feel it currently limits my audience a little bit to just write from my own perspective and experience with products. I have dry and dehydrated skin for example, so that naturally eliminates products aimed at oily skin and creates a gap in what I am able to offer my readers. The aim of introducing the occasional guest blogger is to try a wider range of products aimed at different skin types etc and make my blog even more reader friendly.
Today’s post is written by my dear friend, Jolandi Hough. Jolandi has very sensitive oily skin and I think she will offer us great insight into the products that work and don’t work for her, especially for readers with similar concerns. As with my own reviews, my guest bloggers post about their own experiences and honest opinions. In the event of a negative review please note that the aim never is to brand bash or call products inferior. It is important to remember we all have different skin, hairtypes etc so opinions and experiences will naturally differ. Ok, that’s enough about me! Over to Jolandi
Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup
Jolandi: I have been struggling with extremely oily and sensitive skin for most of my life. This unfortunately makes it rather difficult to find a foundation that will give me a smooth, matte finish that stays in place without clogging my pores or causing break-outs. So when I saw the Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup promised to absorb shine, control oil, resist sweat and stay matte all day I obviously had to try it! I have been using this foundation for a few months and here are my thoughts:
Packaging: The Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup comes in a simple, but practical plastic squeeze tube. The packaging makes it really convenient for traveling or just throwing it in your handbag. Also worth mentioning: the tube has a really tiny opening for dispensing the product, making it easy to control the amount of product per application without wastage.
Consistency: On the Clinique website it states that this product is a liquid foundation, but I found it to be a bit more on the creamy side. I do, however, like this creamier consistency as it makes the product really easy to blend. The foundation blends equally well using your fingers, a flat foundation brush or even a beauty blender. It really depends on what you prefer to use for blending. I tend to start with my fingers and then finish off with a flat foundation brush. I use a foundation brush from Bobbi Brown.
Coverage: The Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup has light to medium coverage. The foundation is buildable but no more than medium coverage. Once applied the product sets almost immediately and you can confidently add additional products to cover blemishes or break-outs and it blends easily without disrupting the make-up underneath. In general I would say it covers most imperfections without the need to use concealer. I do, however, have prominent dark circles under my eyes and need a little extra help with covering this up.
Finish: The foundation has a beautiful smooth, matte finish and doesn’t feel cakey or heavy on the skin. It feels dry to the touch within minutes and have a natural, comfortable feel to it. In general the foundation doesn’t require a setting powder, but I prefer to set my oily T-zone with a dusting of powder to prolong the wear and enhance the oil-control properties.
Wear: The Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup has a lightweight feel to it and I like the fact that it feels dry almost immediately. You don’t have to wait for it to set before applying the rest of your make-up and this is a big plus for me! I personally use the foundation without a primer. The only reason for not using a primer is that I have not yet been able to find a primer that doesn’t clog my pores or cause breakouts – classic sensitive skin problems! So, it’s really up to you if you would like to use a primer. I find that the foundation doesn’t settle into my fine lines and I do not find a need for additional primer products at this stage.
With me having very oily skin I get about 4-5 hours of perfectly matte and shine-free skin when I wear this foundation, even in the humid and warm weather we sometimes experience in the Netherlands 😊 Ladies with true oily skin will understand: this is phenomenal given how quickly my skin gets oily during the day. If you have normal or mild oily skin, the foundation and matte effect should last a lot longer. I do unfortunately have to dab away excess oil, top-up the foundation or use a mattifying powder to keep my matte finish throughout the day.
Suitable skin types: According to Clinique this foundation is suitable for all skin types except dry skin.

What did I think? Well, I think from the above its fairly obvious. I absolutely love the Clinique Stay Matte Makeup. I have tried numerous options (including powder mineral make-up) and so many other brands in the past, but always seem to come back to this product. It’s definitely a keeper in my make-up bag and the Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup has become my go-to foundation. It doesn’t matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to find a product on the market that matches the effect this foundation has on my oily and problematic skin. Just remember, it is a light weight every day wear foundation. If you are looking for a more heavy-duty product that provides full coverage, this might not be the best option for you.
Will I buy this product again? I already have repurchased this foundation and will continue to buy it
